Information for Transfer Applicants: Provisional Admission

Each year, we receive many strong applications for admission to NC State. In an effort to ensure students are prepared for the rigor of our academic programs, a portion of transfer applicants received a provisional admission decision. In these cases, we believe students will be better prepared to succeed at NC State by completing additional coursework before enrolling in classes this fall.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN IF I HAVE BEEN OFFERED PROVISIONAL ADMISSION?

If you’ve been offered provisional admission to NC State for the fall semester, it means that we are impressed by your academic achievement, but we believe you will be better prepared for the academic program that you applied for by completing additional coursework before enrolling in classes this fall. For this reason, our offer of admission is contingent upon your completion of a specific course prior to enrolling at NC State.

WHY DO I NEED TO TAKE A CLASS BEFORE THE FALL SEMESTER IF I WAS ADMITTED?

Your provisional admission course requirement is based on the university’s course requirements by major which are outlined in detail on our recommendations for competitive applicants page. Due to the rigor of our academic programs, students are encouraged to complete these recommended courses prior to transferring to NC State. Your admission to the university is contingent on the completion of a specific course that is foundational to the program you’ve applied for. You must complete the provisional admission course requirement that is listed in your wolfPAW portal prior to attending NC State in the fall.

WHAT DO I NEED TO COMPLETE IF I INTEND TO ENROLL AT NC STATE IN THE FALL?

If you choose to enroll at NC State for the fall 2024 semester, you must accept your offer of provisional admission by confirming your enrollment by May 15. You must also complete the Provisional Admission Course Requirement Form listed in your wolfPAW portal to submit details about the course you intend to take in order to fulfill your provisional admission course requirement by June 1. A final transcript for the coursework you complete this summer must be submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions by August 8.

HOW DO I KNOW IF THE COURSE I AM PLANNING TO TAKE FULFILLS THE REQUIREMENT?

You may choose to take the required course at any institution, but it must be a transferable college-level course that you complete prior to the fall semester with at least a B or better. See how courses from other institutions transfer to NC State in our transfer course credit database. You should also complete the Provisional Admission Course Requirement Form listed in your wolfPAW portal by June 1 to submit details about the course you will take to fulfill your provisional admission course requirement. You will be asked to submit the name of the course, the name of the institution where you will enroll in the course and the course dates.

CAN I TAKE THE REQUIRED COURSE AT NC STATE?

NC State offers a limited number of summer courses that may meet your provisional admission requirement. View course options at summer.ncsu.edu/admissions-and-registration.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DO NOT MEET THE CONDITIONS OF MY ADMISSION BY THE FALL SEMESTER?

If you received an offer of provisional admission, your admission is contingent upon your completion of the required course prior to attending NC State in the fall. If you do not complete the course with at least a B or better before August 8, then your offer of admission will be withdrawn.

IF I UPDATE OR CHANGE MY MAJOR WILL IT CHANGE THE STATUS OF MY ADMISSION?

Provisionally admitted students are not able to request a major change. You must complete the provisional admission course requirement if you would like to attend NC State this fall.

WHAT IF I CANNOT TAKE THE REQUIRED COURSE BEFORE THE FALL SEMESTER?

If you are unable to complete the required course before the fall semester, our admissions staff are available to discuss your next steps. You can email us at undergrad-admissions@ncsu.edu or call us at 919-515-2434. Admissions counselors are also available at the Joyner Visitor Center and the Campus Visits office in Talley Student Union Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

HOW DO I SUBMIT AN OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT FOR THE ADDITIONAL COURSEWORK I TAKE THIS SUMMER?

You should contact your current institution to have your official final transcript with summer grades included sent to NC State’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions. You can check your wolfPAW account to see when your transcript has been received and processed. Please allow up to two weeks from the time your transcript is sent. Your official final transcripts must be received by August 8 to uphold the requirements of your conditional admission.

I’VE CONFIRMED MY ENROLLMENT AND PLAN TO TAKE THE REQUIRED COURSE THIS SUMMER. WHAT ARE MY NEXT STEPS?

Once you have confirmed your enrollment and submitted the Provisional Admission Course Requirement Form in wolfPAW, you should get started with the New Student Checklist to ensure you’re ready to enroll in the fall. Register for Transfer Orientation, complete the housing application if you plan to live on campus and consider signing up for Summer Start to complete the provisional admission course requirement if the required course is available.
