Become a Pre-College Mentor

Current NC State undergraduate students have the opportunity to work closely with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and serve as a mentor to our pre-college participants. Being a pre-college mentor requires initiative, positive energy and a strong commitment to service. Successful mentors demonstrate the ability to work well with youth, creative and effective collaboration with other mentors and possess excellent organizational and communication skills, including the ability to listen carefully and speak persuasively.

Responsibilities:

• Attend and participate in all required training, planning sessions and the entire week of programming
• Interact with NC State faculty, staff, alumni and Undergraduate Admissions representatives
• Maintain timely communication with programming staff
• Facilitate small groups of program participants
• Participate in college preparation workshops featuring topics such as “Approaching the College Search Process,” “Navigating Scholarships and Financial Aid” and “Tips for Writing Your Application Essay”
• Engage in sessions pertaining to your cultural community with a focus on knowing your worth and growing your value on a college campus
• Assist program participants in becoming familiar with various resources and offices they would utilize at a university (e.g. University Housing, Campus Health Center, Counseling Center, Academic and Student Affairs, Campus Community Centers, etc.)

Preferred Experience:

Preference will be given to applicants with previous work or coursework pertaining to youth or education, experience with diverse populations, demonstrated leadership or committed volunteer service.

Compensation:

Mentors will receive a stipend at the conclusion of the program, with good standing. Mentors will also gain invaluable leadership experience and be able to make professional connections with various staff, university professors and campus partners.

Commitment:

Mentors will have three required training dates before the program begins. Mentors will move into their rooms and attend a final training the Saturday morning before the in-person portion of the program begins on Sunday. Mentors are expected to fully engage with their assigned leadership roles throughout the entire program including:

• Chaperoning program participants
• Leading assigned days
• Coordinating programs and activities for program participants
• Staying in the residence halls overnight

Applicants will select whether they would like to be a mentor for the CAMINOS, Native Education Forum or Emerging Scholars Academy pre-college program on the application. All applicants will also be asked to provide three references on the application. Those considered for a mentor position must pass both a criminal background check as well as a student conduct check prior to final selection.

The 2024 Mentor application is now open! Applications are due February 16.

Being a pre-college mentor supervisor requires initiative, positive energy, dedication and a strong commitment to service. Successful mentor supervisors will demonstrate the ability to work well with youth, provide leadership and support for the mentors and possess excellent organizational and communication skills, including the ability to speak persuasively.

Responsibilities:

• Attend and participate in all required mentor trainings, program planning sessions and the entire week of programming
• Interact with NC State faculty, staff, alumni and Undergraduate Admissions representatives
• Maintain timely communication with programming staff
• Work with other mentor supervisors in creating and conducting three mentor training and development sessions
• Oversee mentors during the week of programming
• Serve as liaison between the mentors and Undergraduate Admissions staff

Preference will be given to applicants with previous work or coursework pertaining to youth or education, work with diverse populations, demonstrated leadership or committed volunteer service.

Mentor supervisors will be required to attend bi-weekly meetings throughout the spring semester, create and implement three training sessions for mentors and attend the entire week of programming. Mentor supervisors will move into their rooms and conduct a final training for the mentors Saturday morning before the in-person portion of the program begins on Sunday. Mentor supervisors are expected to fully engage with their assigned leadership roles throughout the entire program including:

• Chaperoning program participants
• Coordinating training and development programs for mentors
• Providing leadership and support for the mentors
• Staying in the residence halls overnight
