Information for University Honors Program Alternates

Applying to the University Honors Program (UHP) is a significant part of your journey to NC State. This year, our team reviewed nearly 12,000 applications. While we faced difficult decisions in an exceptionally competitive cycle, we want to recognize the hard work and impressive academic records that brought our applicants to this point.

If you have been designated as a UHP Alternate, you likely have questions about what this status means and how you can still join our community. Below, we have outlined the paths available to you and what you can expect in the coming months.

Your Path to the University Honors Program

There are two ways you can still join the UHP community:

Final Review

As the initial group of admitted students makes their college decisions, spaces may open up in the UHP. If a spot becomes available for you, we will reach out via email with a formal invitation. These updates typically occur in early May.

Guaranteed Mid-Year Admission

For students who remain on alternate list after early-May, and who enroll at NC State this fall, we provide a guaranteed path into the program. If you complete your first semester (fall 2026) at NC State with a GPA of 3.5 or higher, you will be invited to join the UHP for the spring.

Next Steps for Alternates

No Action Required

At this time, the UHP does not require any additional information, updated transcripts, or letters of continued interest from you. Your original application remains active in our system for the final review process.

If a Fall Space Opens Up

If a space becomes available for the fall 2026 semester, we will contact you directly via email. No further action is needed on your part to remain eligible for this move.

Looking Ahead to November

If a space does not open up for the fall semester, your hard work can still pave the way. If you enroll at NC State and maintain the required 3.5 GPA during your first semester, watch your inbox in late November (typically just before Thanksgiving break). We will send you a formal invitation to join the UHP for the spring 2027 term, and you will simply need to accept it at that time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this affect my admission to NC State?

No. Your status as a UHP Alternate is entirely separate from your admission to the university. It has no impact on your admission to your major or your eligibility for university-wide scholarships.

Is the alternate list ranked?

The alternate list is not numbered or ranked. If space becomes available in May, the UHP staff re-reviews the pool of alternates to fill open spots based on program capacity and the needs of the incoming cohort.

Who can I contact with questions?

For general information about the alternate process or the mid-year admission path, you may contact the UHP office at 919.515.2353 or email university_honors@ncsu.edu.
