Information for Students Not Admitted to the University Honors Program
Choosing to apply to the University Honors Program (UHP) shows a commitment to academic excellence and a desire to engage deeply with the NC State community. This year, our office received nearly 12,000 applications from an incredibly talented pool of students.
Because the UHP is a capacity-limited program, we are unfortunately unable to offer admission to every qualified applicant. If you were not selected for the program this year, we understand you may have questions about what this means for your future at NC State. Below, we’ve outlined the next steps and opportunities available to you.
Understanding the Decision
The review process for the UHP is holistic and exceptionally competitive. While we were able to extend offers to many outstanding students, the high volume of applications meant we had to make many difficult decisions.
Please keep in mind that a decision from the UHP is not a reflection of your academic potential. Your admission to NC State University remains a significant achievement, and we have no doubt that you will continue to excel throughout your college career.

Your Admission to NC State
It is important to remember that your UHP status is entirely separate from your admission to NC State. This decision does not affect:
- Your admission to your chosen major or college.
- Any university-wide or departmental scholarships you may have received.
- Your eligibility for other campus organizations, clubs, or research opportunities.
Focus on Your First Year
While you will not be starting your first semester in the UHP, NC State offers a wealth of other high-impact experiences. We encourage you to explore:
- Living and Learning Villages: There are many other themed residential communities that offer a smaller “home base” on campus.
- Undergraduate Research: You do not need to be in the University Honors Program to participate in research across our various colleges.
- Study Abroad: Global experiences are available to all NC State students.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I appeal the decision?
To ensure a fair and consistent process for all applicants, all UHP decisions are final. We do not accept appeals or additional materials for re-evaluation during this admission cycle.
Can I apply to the UHP later?
Yes! Many students join the UHP after they have already arrived on campus. Students who distinguish themselves during their first year at NC State may be eligible to apply for Midyear Entry admission.
- To be eligible, you typically need to complete at least one full semester at NC State and establish a strong university GPA.
- Information regarding the application process for current students is typically shared during the fall semester of your first year (around Thanksgiving break).
