Hannah Litzenberger

While nearing the end of her high-school career, NC State Senior Hannah Litzenberger had already determined that whatever university she chose to attend, it would have to take her education beyond the boundaries of textbooks and classrooms.

"Of the schools I applied to, the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at NC State had the most friendly, welcoming students and staff," said Litzenberger, a natural resources major concentrating in ecosystem assessment. "My advisors and professors are receptive, open and helpful, and I love the close-knit nature of my degree program."

A member of the University Scholars Program and Xi Sigma Pi honors fraternity, Litzenberger has also served as a College of Natural Resources ambassador, a summer camp counselor with the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources and a New International Student Orientation Group Leader with the university's Office of International Studies.

"I love being in the big school environment," she said. "There are always new people to meet and a constant stream of activities and things to do."

And then there's the travel, Litzenberger said with a smile.

The Cary, NC, native has been to all corners of the world during her time at NC State: studying abroad in Australia, learning about sustainable forestry in China and traveling to Spain with the University Scholars Program.

Stateside, Litzenberger has hiked portions of the Appalachian Trail, sea-kayaked in North Carolina's Outer Banks and visited New York City – all trips that were either subsidized or partially funded with scholarships to help mitigate the costs.

"I love being in the big school environment – there are always new people to meet and a constant stream of activities and things to do," she said. "NC State has provided me with countless opportunities to apply my knowledge through hands-on experiences."
