Delaina Sheppard
As a member of the Army ROTC and recipient of a four-year scholarship to the program at NC State, Delaina considered attending a military academy, but ultimately chose NC State for the leadership and management focus — and the fun.
Army ROTC has added a lot to her experience at NC State, says Sheppard. And because it is a class, "I am earning a minor in military science." In class twice a week, learning beyond the classroom also is a part of the program. Delaina and her fellow cadets go out in the field and experience what a future in the actual Army would be like in hands-on, real-world training experiences."
Whether she's in the classroom, in the forest or on a Black Hawk military helicopter thousands of feet in the air, Delaina often finds herself making decisions that affect not just her own wellbeing but that of her fellow cadets.
