Alex Martin
You might wonder when Alex Martin sleeps. The junior is über-involved in crew, theatre, service trips abroad, leadership programs, his residence hall, and oh, then there’s his double major.
"I chose to attend NC State because of my experiences with the Hugh Shelton Leadership Center," Martin said. " In 2005, I was a participant of the Shelton Leadership Challenge Institute, and volunteered with the Institute over the next two years.
"I met so many people who went to NC State and was so impressed with their dedication to the program," he said. "I heard stories of the opportunities here. They were like me – involved in everything."
Four times a week, the Caldwell Fellow is rowing hard, doing his part to get a narrow, 63-foot boat to its destination faster than the next boatload of eight people. That, plus the studies required of a Hamilton Scholar (shorthand for a double major in business management and international studies) would surely be enough, but not for Martin. He believes in branching out — not spreading thin — and getting all he can from learning and life at NC State.
"The Caldwell Fellows program stands up for everything I believe in: thinking big and putting yourself out there to try new things and get involved.," Martin said. "The Caldwells place a high value on community service, which is a high personal value for me.
"I’ve helped package food to go to Peru, jumped in the Polar Plunge, and I’m going to run in the Relay for Life," he said. "Why not? There are so many opportunities that come right to NC State, it’s hard to not serve!"
