Adrianna Harrell

Although she was accepted to a number of top universities both in and out of North Carolina, Adrianna Harrell made her decision to come to NC State University based equally on the programs offered by the university as well as its overall vibe.

"I am, and have always been a writer by nature," she said. "Not many other institutions offered the extensive writing program I wanted, needed and found here."

"I truly enjoyed being able to freely express myself in the Admissions application's essays without restriction, or worrying about how my witty and liberal responses would be received."

An extremely family-oriented person, it was important to Harrell that she was close enough to home so that her family could attend events she would participate in on campus.

"My family and I were invited to NC State's Minority Recruitment night, and I fell completely in love with the campus upon arrival," she said. "No other institution felt as warm, welcoming, and as truly accepting of individuality as NC State."

A member of numerous honors programs, Harrell has made straight A's in the classroom while serving as a sexual violence peer educator, a mentor and role model to local elementary, middle and high-school students, a news writer for the Nubian Message and as the co-chair to the Historian of the Society of African-American Culture, NC State's oldest African-American association.

"NC State has so many organizations that embrace the interests of everyone and if not, we are able to create our own," Harrell said. "I love the fact that I have developed lasting relationships with professors and mentors that enhance my experience here even after the courses have come to an end."

"At NC State, I have truly acquired the close proximity to home that I desired, as well as another ‘home away from home,'" she said. "There's only way to describe it – perfection!"
