international - Application Fine Print

For admission to NC State, the Undergraduate Admissions Office considers you an international applicant if you are not a citizen or permanent resident (green card holder for more than one year) of the United States.

International Student Application Process

International admission to NC State is competitive. The criteria for U.S. and international applicants is similar — while a strong academic record and competitive test scores are the primary focus — we also value your talents, passions and interests. Application requirements vary for freshman and transfer applicants. Remember, if you have already entered university or post-secondary education, you must apply to NC State as a transfer student; please be sure to note additional transfer application requirements.

Applicants whose secondary school work is from outside the U.S. are exempt from the Minimum Course Requirements, as set forth by the UNC-Office of the President.

Application Deadlines:

In order for an application to be considered complete, applicants must submit all items below by the appropriate deadline:

Application Process Requirements

If you are an international applicant, you are required to submit the following:

All academic documents and test scores will be reviewed. Students who are deemed academically admissible will be required to complete additional clearance and financial documentation through our Office of International Services before being fully admitted to the University. Please see "Required Financial Documentation and Visas" section below.

Additional Transfer Application Requirements

Please note, international applicants may not request First Year College or undeclared majors within a college.

Application & Fee

All international applicants must apply online by creating a WolfPAW account. A non-refundable application fee of $70 (US. dollars) is required. You can pay online when you submit your application or pay by mail (checks or money orders should be made payable to NC State University.)

Required Academic Records

Transcripts from U.S. high schools or American schools outside the U.S. must be official, and include all courses and grades. Transcripts from schools outside the U.S. must be original or certified true copies, with original signatures of all transcripts and accompanied by professional English translations. A certified true copy is one that bears an original signature of the registrar or other designated school official, an original impression of the institution's seal, or signature/seal of the examining board. Uncertified copies are not acceptable. Scanned academic documents will also not be accepted as official.

Records should list subjects studied each year of secondary/high school and the mark, grade, or proficiency earned in each. A key to the marking system with minimum passing mark must be included. If you complete secondary school in a country where a secondary school leaving examination (GCE, GCSE, CXC, French Baccalaureate, Abitur, etc.) is administered, you will need to provide an original or a certified true copy of your results.

Transfer Applicants

Transfer applicants must submit official transcripts from each college or university attended within the US or outside the US. Students who have attended a foreign college or university outside the US must submit an official "course-by-course" evaluation of all courses via one of the NACES-accredited foreign credential evaluation services listed:

Testing Requirements

All freshman applicants (including international freshman applicants) must take either the SAT-I or ACT exam. Please have the College Board (SAT) or ACT forward your official results to the Undergraduate Admissions Office at NC State University (SAT code #5496, ACT code #3164). The SAT and ACT tests are offered in most countries.

English Proficiency

All international applicants must prove English proficiency. Admission will not be granted until English proficiency is met. An applicant may prove English proficiency by one of the following:

Required Financial Documentation and Visas

Once an international student is academically admissible, the Admissions Office will send you an email, along with the Certificate of Financial Responsibility (CFR) and, if needed, a Visa Clearance Form (VCF). You will need to submit the CFR and/or VCF documents to the Office of International Services (OIS) for approval.

The CFR offers evidence of your ability to cover all expenses for each year of study, including expenses of any accompanying dependents. If you are privately sponsored, you must document the first year's assured support on deposit in a bank. You must also provide certification from parents/sponsors of support for all years of study.

Until a completed CFR is received and approved, a Form I-20 or DSP-2019 for securing a visa cannot be issued. Applicants from some countries experiencing difficulties in the transfer of funds to the United States may be required to deposit in a U.S. bank in advance the first year's projected expenses.

For international applicants in the Unites States, CFR and VCF forms must be received by June 1 for fall applicants and October 15 for spring applicants. International applicants who are out-of-country must submit forms no later than May 1 (for fall admission) or September 15 (for spring admission).

Please note, due to federal changes in the processing of international applications, there may be delays in approval of documents.

Visas

The I-20 for an F-1 visa or DSP-2019 for a J-1 visa will be issued only when all requirements are met. International applicants attending college in the U.S. at the time of application must submit a completed VCF to OIS. This form must be completed by the international student advisor at your current school.
