spreading love the old fashioned way

Post by Michelle Hunt

With the growth of the internet, you can send a greeting card in the blink of an eye. You don’t even need to wait until the actual occasion as  e-cards can be programed to be sent days in advance. Modern technology has made this process very easy and convenient. However, nothing makes someone feel more special than a homemade card to let them know how much they are appreciated, and that’s just what NC State students do.

When I was a sophomore, I was a part of the Youth Outreach Section of CSLEPS. One of our programs included making greeting cards for ill children at a local hospital. We teamed up with some of the kids from the Boys and Girls Club and together made the cards.  Our mission was to simply remind the children that others were thinking about them as they go through this traumatic experience.

For the past two years, a campus organization called Reach Out and Touch has held a Valentine’s Day Card Social where other organizations help them make Valentine’s Day cards. This year the cards were made specifically for the elderly and those hospitalized by unfortunate circumstances. Some of the cards included funny messages and others a sweet message, all with the intention of putting a smile on the face of the person reading it.

People appreciate when others go the extra mile to do something special for them. So the next time a special occasion comes along or you simply want to remind someone how much you care about them, why not make a card to show your appreciation. A little thought, goes a long way…
