Students Showcase at Heritage Day

If you did not already know, NC State students are all about service. You can find endless volunteer opportunities off campus as well as on campus. One on campus opportunity is Heritage Day. This annual event sponsored by the African American Cultural Center,  brings youth in from the surrounding community to campus for a series of workshops. These workshops include tons of fun activities led by a variety of NC State’s student organizations.

Each student organization donates their time and talents to show the youth what they know best. The kids were able to test out their skills with many different activities including singing, dancing and stepping. The African American Textile Society participated in an arts and crafts activity. We made t-shirt scarves with elementary students.

Greek organizations taught the students how to step and singing groups performed a well-known and energetic song. My favorite part of this program is the ending showcase where the children show off everything they learned that day. From “Sankofa Theatre” to African dancing; it was clear to see the kids were able to have fun while learning. What I really love most about this volunteer opportunity and all of the others on and off campus is walking away knowing you made a difference. NC State students always set out to make a difference in the community.
