College of Agriculture and Life Sciences

Post by Michelle Hunt

Hey Guys it’s me again! I’m dropping in to give you the 411 on the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences also known as CALS. I am actually enrolled into CALS as my major is Biological Sciences. CALS includes majors like mine, as well as Animal Science, Zoology, Nutrition Science, Microbiology, Plant and Soil Sciences, Genetics, Food Science and Biochemistry. It is the second largest college on NC State’s campus and in my opinion the best college to be a part of. If you want to pursue a career in medicine, optometry, dentistry, or veterinary medicine then this is the college for you.

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences provides its students with many resources to help you with both academic and professional development. One of CALS greatest resources is the CALS Career Services. The Career Service is helpful if you are trying to find research opportunities on campus, internships or help building your resume. I have used the career services in the past when I was struggling with what to do with my life after college. I scheduled an appointment and spoke with a career counselor who helped me formulate a plan and look at different career options.

There is a wide range of clubs that fall under CALS and you are bound to find one that interests you. Just to name a few there is the Pre-Vet Club, the Pre-Med Club, the Horticulture Club, the Nutrition Club, the Zoology Club, the Alpha Zeta Honor Fraternity (CO-ed) and Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resource and Related Science (MANNRS) which is the club that I am a member in. These clubs are constantly putting on programs and events for you to attend on campus. My favorite event is Agriculture Awareness week. During Ag Week, the different clubs promote awareness and appreciation of agriculture on campus. This includes information booths in the brickyard about a particular topic, as well as the opportunity to pet real life animals like cows, turtles and snakes.
