North Carolina State University is a very health-conscious institution. University Dining offers fresh and delicious meals, while the Student Health Center makes sure that everyone is sniffle-free and in good spirits. With all these aspects of health and wellness covered, it’s only fitting that the school offers a state-of-the-art fitness facility. This is where Carmichael Gym comes in. It’s a HUGE facility, packed with more weight lifting equipment than I’ve ever seen in one place. It has 11 basketball courts, a dance studio, a fencing room, 5 cardio and weight training facilities, and much more. If you’re a fitness junkie or just want to get in shape, this is the place for you!
Another cool part about Carmichael Gym is the fact that it’s adjacent to the Carmichael Recreation Center. It houses great spaces such as a “Cardio Theatre,” complete with plasma screen televisions and a lot of cardio equipment, more weight rooms, a massage therapy studio, a fitness studio, and Outdoor Adventures equipment. Also connected to Carmichael Gym is the Aquatics Center. It has a wet-classroom, 50 meter and 25 yard pools, and a few other fun additions. I personally can’t swim… At all… so I rarely visit this segment of the Complex. However, it’s fun to pretend like I know how to swim in the shallow part of the pool when I do go there. So if you see a tall guy floundering around haplessly in the shallow end, that’s probably me.
Back to Carmichael Gym, my favorite routine involves running a mile on the awesome indoor track, going into the room in the center of the track to lift weights, moving downstairs to use a row machine, then running a cool down mile. Everything you need is within grasp at our gym! Now, no workout at the gym is complete without a relaxing sauna visit. It’s a perfect place to unwind and loosen up after a strenuous workout. It’s also a fun place to share workout secrets with your peers.
Overall, your stay at State will be a very healthy one, especially if you take advantage of the fantastic facilities here!
