bored? I’m here to help
Post by John Taylor
What do you do when you’ve got nothing to do? Do you study? Of course, I’m bored so I study for 15 hours. I know that’s not true, my parents know that’s not true whether or not I tell them it is, and I am sure you know that it is not true and that your parents know it’s not true. So what do you do? So then we both ask, what will John write about? Will he rewrite something that has been rewritten 1000 times about clubs… yada yada yada. For a first, no I will not write about that. I will write about what we really do, video games, movies, music, and sports – well I always write about sports, so I won’t this time.
Music is a huge one for me, I love listening, watching live and most importantly, I love making music. A lot of my free time, when I find it, is spent playing guitar, writing music, singing, and combining the three. In Raleigh there is a chance to see live music practically every night. I have seen several shows at places like the Lincoln Theater and Cat’s Cradle. Those are some of the small arenas in the area; Raleigh also offers big shows at the Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion, as well as the PNC Arena. Downtown Raleigh also offers an outdoor music pavilion known as the Red Hat Raleigh Amphitheater and bars offer free music pretty much every weekend. We are not L.A., but there is definitely a music scene in Raleigh, NC.
Next up on my award winning list of college activities is video games. For me, it’s a great way to kill some time, beat up on my roommates, (to be honest, it’s the other way around, I’m horrible). The great thing about NC State is that if you are really into video games, you can major in computer science with a game development concentration. The creators of Gears of War are NC State grads and their studio is in Cary, no big deal. There is down time and for a lot of students my age there is nothing better than shooting zombies and having the Cavaliers beat the Lakers. Be mindful though, you only need to play so much, it would be a terrible decision to let video games overtake your life.
If you’ve got time and are still bored, go see a movie. Luck for you as a future student, NC State has two “college priced” movie theaters within walking distance from campus. One is the $2.00 theater, which plays movies that debuted 6 months earlier, so it is a great way to see the good movies for quite a bit cheaper than on opening night. Across the street from campus is the $6 theater, which is home to all of the big hits, in fact I went past there last night and they are still playing Django Unchained, but everything else is up to date!
There is plenty to do in Raleigh when you are bored, as you can tell with what I came up with when I was in the same situation. Remember, Go Pack!
