25 Random Things About Our Admissions Crew

I saw this cute note on Facebook entitled “25 Random Things About…” and I thought to myself, how cute would it be if I did a 25 thing list for the Admissions Office?  So I’m going to try my hand at it.

Announcing the 25 Random Things about the Admissions Office (can you hear the drum roll in the background)!!!!!

The Professional Pose!

1.  Let’s start off with me.  I am absolutely terrified of aliens from outer space.  Like for real.  Are you laughing?  I am being so sincere right now.  I do not watch movies with aliens, nor do I read books on them.  If a picture of an alien (like the ones on Unsolved Mysteries) pops up on my screen, I will either turn off the television or exit out of my browser.

2.  Shonaka tried out for the MTV show, The Real World.  Unfortunately she did not make it.

3.  Two of our staff members have auditioned for American Idol.  Dana tried out for American Idol season 4 and Roger tried out for the 1st NC State Employee Pack Idol and WON!

4.  Two of our staff members played baseball in college.  One at University of North Carolina at Wilmington and the other at Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA.

5.  Tommy was a four-sport varsity athlete in high school.  The next time you meet him, ask him how he got the name “Psycho-T.”

6.  Elizabeth likes to walk through the bread aisle at the grocery store.  Not really sure why, so we won’t judge:-).

7.  More than half of our staff members have a degree from NC State.

8.  Dana rode bicycle in a 100 mile Tour de Cure ride-athon to raise money for American Diabetes Association.  In a very smooth maneuver at the start of the race she hairline fractured her elbow and still rode the full 100 miles.

9.  Myron is the on-site wedding planner for our office.  Anyone getting married?

10.  Shonaka has saved every movie and concert ticket since 2001.  She’s a PACKrat.

11.  Stephanie Parker started an antique tractor group called, the “Classic Antique Power, Inc.” about four years ago in Four Oaks, NC.  She owns a restored 1936 John Deere “A” and enjoys driving her tractor in parades, tractor rides and attending farm shows with it.

12.  As a teenager, Dana spent three summers doing concert tours with a traveling youth choir.

13.  Vern is an infomercial-a-holic!  One of his favorite stores in Crabtree Valley Mall is ”As Seen on TV”.  He makes a purchase just about once a month.  His last couple of purchases have been the Fix it Car Scratch Remover and the Shamwow.

14.  Keyana was the 3rd grade Wiffle Ball Champion of Peeler Open School in Greensboro, NC.

15.  I played on the Varsity soccer team in high school and broke my leg against Cary High School.  Surprisingly enough, before the accident, my team name was “Bonecrusher.”  Go Trojans by the way!

16.  Every summer over the 4th of July, Dana takes a trip with a group of friends to go camping, hiking, and white-water rafting.

17.  Prior to her start in the admissions office, Joyce had a career in television news production in Jacksonville, FL.

18.  When Laura enrolled at NC State, the student population was 10% women and 90% men.  There was no Brickyard, just a grassy field where students cut paths to go to class.  The Centennial Campus was not even a dream at that time.  She started working in the Admissions office as a work-study student her freshman year, and has been associated with this office ever since.  She has a long and deep history at NC State!

19.  In high school, Joyce won the Map Reading contest at a Science Olympiad competition.

20.   Vern won the Cape May County Spelling Bee contest for his area in the 3rd grade.

21.  At the end of each admissions cycle, Tommy springs for Moonpies and RC Cola to celebrate.  (Can we say “BALLING?”).

22.  We have some of the best bakers in our office!  Ms. Paula makes the BEST chocolate cake EVER!  Shonaka makes the BEST Banana Pudding!  Mrs. Lynette makes muffins to die for!  I’m getting hungry now, so you get the picture.

23. Our Transfer Coordinator (who shall remain nameless) has a secret passion for Sour Gummy Gators, Sour Worms, Sour Patch Kids, and anything else that’s sweet and sour.

24.  Keyana and I have decided that we are going to try out for the 2012 Olympics.  What sport?  Table Tennis.  We even have our USA outfits together.  If you happen to know a great coach, let me know!

25. As co-director of music (I share this title with a couple of folks in the office), it is my responsibility to teach Tommy a new dance move every year.  In 2007, I taught Tommy how to do the Souljah Boy and this past year, I got him to do the Cupid Shuffle.  I am not sure what’s in store for this year but I’m open to suggestions.

Now you know a little bit more about our admissions crew.  Our staff is made up of some great people that make coming to work fun and exciting.  So the next time you see us, don’t hesitiate to come by and say hi or smile or wave.  We’ll wave right back!
