Ending World Hunger with Stop Hunger Now

Post by Brittney Garcia

A few days ago, I volunteered with Stop Hunger Now. Stop Hunger Now is an international organization dedicated:

“to end hunger in our lifetime by providing food and life-saving aid to the world’s most vulnerable and by creating a global commitment to mobilize the necessary resources“.

My awesome group!

This hunger relief agency has been working since 1998, packaging meals and aids for families all over the world. NC State hosted one of these meal packaging events and many students and people from the community had the opportunity to volunteer.

There are many different stations: some that package the meals (people are also there refilling the supplies), others that run the meals to the people that weigh them and seal them which are then given to the people that put them in the boxes. This day was divided into 2 shifts and I had the opportunity to be part of the first shift.

Let me do a small breakdown for you.

Person 1: Puts the vitamins into the bag and holds it under the funnel.
Person 2: Soy protein
Person 3: Vegetables mix (that was me! And yes, I made a mess)
Person 4: Rice

Then, as I mentioned before, they are sealed and placed in boxes.

This year, (including both shifts) all the volunteers packaged a total of 125,250 meals for school lunch feeding programs around the world!

The reason this project caught my attention is because I love organizations that help at an international level. This project reminded me of my goals and dreams to make a difference in someone’s life and that it doesn’t take a lot of money to make a huge difference to just one person or family. Once I graduate, I hope to end up working with a non-profit that also focuses on an international level and NC State has provided me with amazing opportunities to get ahead.

This project also helped me remember all the reasons I have to be thankful which made Thanksgiving even more special this year. I’m happy to be back in school and ready to face the next few weeks of projects and exams but… I miss my awesome family and I am thankful to have them in my life.

My "little" cousins- Thanksgiving Break!

Thankful for my Daddy!
