25 Random Things About Our Admissions Crew

I saw this cute note on Facebook entitled “25 Random Things About…” and I thought to myself, how cute would it be if I did a 25 thing list for the Admissions Office?  So I’m going to try my hand at it.

Announcing the 25 Random Things about the Admissions Office (can you hear the drum roll in the background)!!!!!

Go Pack!

The Professional Pose!

1.  Let’s start off with me.  I am absolutely terrified of aliens from outer space.  Like for real.  Are you laughing?  I am being so sincere right now.  I do not watch movies with aliens, nor do I read books on them.  If a picture of an alien (like the ones on Unsolved Mysteries) pops up on my screen, I will either turn off the television or exit out of my browser.

2.  Shonaka tried out for the MTV show, The Real World.  Unfortunately she did not make it.

3.  Two of our staff members have auditioned for American Idol.  Dana tried out for American Idol season 4 and Roger tried out for the 1st NC State Employee Pack Idol and WON!

4.  Two of our staff members played baseball in college.  One at University of North Carolina at Wilmington and the other at Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA.

5.  Tommy was a four-sport varsity athlete in high school.  The next time you meet him, ask him how he got the name “Psycho-T.”

6.  Elizabeth likes to walk through the bread aisle at the grocery store.  Not really sure why, so we won’t judge:-).

7.  More than half of our staff members have a degree from NC State.

8.  Dana rode bicycle in a 100 mile Tour de Cure ride-athon to raise money for American Diabetes Association.  In a very smooth maneuver at the start of the race she hairline fractured her elbow and still rode the full 100 miles.

9.  Myron is the on-site wedding planner for our office.  Anyone getting married?

10.  Shonaka has saved every movie and concert ticket since 2001.  She’s a PACKrat.

11.  Stephanie Parker started an antique tractor group called, the “Classic Antique Power, Inc.” about four years ago in Four Oaks, NC.  She owns a restored 1936 John Deere “A” and enjoys driving her tractor in parades, tractor rides and attending farm shows with it.

12.  As a teenager, Dana spent three summers doing concert tours with a traveling youth choir.

13.  Vern is an infomercial-a-holic!  One of his favorite stores in Crabtree Valley Mall is ”As Seen on TV”.  He makes a purchase just about once a month.  His last couple of purchases have been the Fix it Car Scratch Remover and the Shamwow.

14.  Keyana was the 3rd grade Wiffle Ball Champion of Peeler Open School in Greensboro, NC.

15.  I played on the Varsity soccer team in high school and broke my leg against Cary High School.  Surprisingly enough, before the accident, my team name was “Bonecrusher.”  Go Trojans by the way!

16.  Every summer over the 4th of July, Dana takes a trip with a group of friends to go camping, hiking, and white-water rafting.

17.  Prior to her start in the admissions office, Joyce had a career in television news production in Jacksonville, FL.

18.  When Laura enrolled at NC State, the student population was 10% women and 90% men.  There was no Brickyard, just a grassy field where students cut paths to go to class.  The Centennial Campus was not even a dream at that time.  She started working in the Admissions office as a work-study student her freshman year, and has been associated with this office ever since.  She has a long and deep history at NC State!

19.  In high school, Joyce won the Map Reading contest at a Science Olympiad competition.

20.   Vern won the Cape May County Spelling Bee contest for his area in the 3rd grade.

21.  At the end of each admissions cycle, Tommy springs for Moonpies and RC Cola to celebrate.  (Can we say “BALLING?”).

22.  We have some of the best bakers in our office!  Ms. Paula makes the BEST chocolate cake EVER!  Shonaka makes the BEST Banana Pudding!  Mrs. Lynette makes muffins to die for!  I’m getting hungry now, so you get the picture.

23. Our Transfer Coordinator (who shall remain nameless) has a secret passion for Sour Gummy Gators, Sour Worms, Sour Patch Kids, and anything else that’s sweet and sour.

24.  Keyana and I have decided that we are going to try out for the 2012 Olympics.  What sport?  Table Tennis.  We even have our USA outfits together.  If you happen to know a great coach, let me know!

25. As co-director of music (I share this title with a couple of folks in the office), it is my responsibility to teach Tommy a new dance move every year.  In 2007, I taught Tommy how to do the Souljah Boy and this past year, I got him to do the Cupid Shuffle.  I am not sure what’s in store for this year but I’m open to suggestions.

Now you know a little bit more about our admissions crew.  Our staff is made up of some great people that make coming to work fun and exciting.  So the next time you see us, don’t hesitiate to come by and say hi or smile or wave.  We’ll wave right back!

Sunday, February 15, 2009 was the 4th Annual Hoops 4 Hope women’s basketball game against Virginia in Reynolds Coliseum.  Hoops 4 Hope is an event designed to raise money and awareness for the disease that ultimately took the life of head women’s basketball coach Kay Yow on January 24th, 2009.  Thousands of fans gathered wearing pink, the color of breast cancer awareness.  Even the band, the dance team, and the cheerleaders wore pink as their uniforms.  For the first time in its four years, the game was sold out.  About 250 breast cancer survivors were recognized at halftime.   All money raised at the game went to support the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.  The event raised over $91,000, and on top of that GlaxoSmithKline gave a $200,000 check.  The previous high for the event was $44,000 in 2007.  With the support of the band, the dance team, the cheerleaders, and thousands of fans, the Wolfpack women beat No. 17 Virginia 60-54.

The Coolest Basketball Game Ever!

I went home a couple of weekends ago to go to one of my cousin’s basketball games. I had never been to a game quite like this one, and I had no idea what to expect. To my surprise, it was an intense and enjoyable experience.

The game that I am talking about is wheelchair basketball. About two years ago, my cousin was diagnosed with Guillain Barre Syndrome. To my understanding, this rare disorder of the nervous system paralyzes its victims, my cousin being one of them.  Everyday she is improving, coming from no movement in her arms and legs, to using a walker and shooting a basketball. I believe that in faith, she will soon be walking on her own again.

A couple of months ago, she decided to play wheelchair basketball. I remember pulling up in the parking lot of the gym, not knowing what to expect from the game. As I walked in, I was surprised. The two teams were warming up for the game. They were doing lay-up drills, making behind the back passes, shooting 3-pointers and foul shots, and doing everything that I would do in a basketball game. They showed me some AND1 moves I’d never seen before! Please believe, that they can, and will cross you over!!!

After the game started, the intensity level sky-rocketed. Everybody was into the game! The players were very physical, and were fouling each other, hard! By the end of the game I was in awe. I was amazed at the skill level of each and every one of the players. After the game (My cousin’s team won!!!) my cousin began to explain to me the amount of work that goes into wheelchair basketball, and how she had to get used to its style of play.  Now, whenever I come to town, my cousin can expect to have one more fan cheering her on at her games.

Design

Oh yes it’s that time of the year! This past weekend myself and other college of design students helped volunteer with the admissions process for the College of Design. From welcoming anxious high school students and their families, to touring students around the Design Campus, volunteers helped to prepare candidates for the fall 2009 intake process. Although freezing and windy, Design faculty, staff, and students were well prepared and covered from head to toe in “Wolf Pack Red” and helped guide the flow of traffic while students waited patiently to hear about their competition and process for admission.

Once welcomed by Marva Motley, the College of Design Assistant Dean for Student Affairs (Student Organizations), students were broken into groups based on the major they were applying for.  Whether it was: Art and Design, Industrial Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or Graphic Design, students scheduled interviews to meet with professors and go over portfolios. While students were waiting for their interviews they were led by student ambassadors and volunteers to tour the college. Viewing the Brooks Hall Main Gallery, Library, and Multi-media Lab, Graphic Design studios, Industrial Design studios and shop, students began to get a glimpse into the College of Design. Once the tours were finished, the big Kahuna, yep, Marvin Malecha (the Dean of the College of Design) greeted them again but this time he discussed the process and the expectations.  This was followed by a presentation by Financial Aid, University Housing, and lastly a student panel. Overall students came out to leave their best impression on the professors, and staff  hoping for a chance to become apart of the NC State family.

The Cure!

So I haven’t been posting lately, but there is a good reason. I got a hardcore bacterial infection and did not have the ability to do anything other than eat jello and pudding…ahhh pudding. This unfortunate occurrence lead me to something else I can tell y’all about..the Student Health Center.

State has an excellent student health facility. You can set up appointments online, walk-in, do the self check-in, and be in the office without breaking a sweat (unless your fever is breaking like mine was).  The doctors and nurses seem to really know what they were talking about and have an in-house lab that did the bacterial swab and blood tests. They had the tests back and I got the medication I needed from the pharmacy in the front and was on my way to a quick recovery.

That’s the story of my trip to the student health center.  My suite mate has also been there for MRI scans and my girlfriend has gotten X-rays done there. They have Counselors, within the Counseling Center to talk about everything from panic attacks to weight loss. They also have a center soley for the ladies, to take care of all those things I don’t really understand. I was very impressed by the capabilities of that building, but hope I won’t be back for a while.
