Transfer Admission Review Process

NC State Undergraduate Admissions employs a holistic approach in reviewing transfer students’ applications and considers a range of accomplishments and qualifications. While competitive transfer applicants must meet the following requirements, these factors alone do not guarantee admission:

  • a strong cumulative GPA for all transferable college work previously attempted. (View NC State Academic Programs Admissions Considerations.)
  • 30 semester hours (or 45 quarter hours ) of transferable credits
  • credit for a college level English composition course and a college Math course applicable to the requested degree program. Please note: Statistics can not be used to meet the Math requirement
  • eligibility to return to each institution previously attended
  • UNC-system Minimum Course Requirements
  • attempted coursework through NC State University’s Non-Degree Studies Program (NDS) must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 or higher in order to be considered for admission.
  • GPAs are calculated based on all transferable-types of courses attempted. Courses repeated at previous institutions are calculated with the original grades earned.  We will exclude the two lowest grades below a C when calculating the overall cumulative GPA from all colleges attended outside of NC State University.

Please note: Students taking college-level courses while in high school (dual enrollment), including early college high schools, are freshman applicants for admission purposes.

NC State Academic Programs Admission Considerations

Competitive transfer applicants have at least 30 hours of transferable credits and meet their requested program’s unique GPA and course requirements (see below). However, these factors alone do not guarantee admission, as a range of accomplishments and qualifications are also considered.

Transferable Credits

Follow this link for a list of AP scores that qualify for meeting transfer admission coursework requirements.

College-level work must be completed with a C or better grade at a regionally accredited institution to be considered for admission/transfer credit. Work completed in technical programs is not considered for transfer credit or GPA calculation.

Credits awarded by another institution without a letter grade of C or higher cannot be used to meet admissions requirements.

Applicants can search the following databases to determine which course credits from other institutions will transfer to NC State.  Final authority regarding course transferability toward a particular degree rests with the individual academic units.  Equivalent courses designated as **** transfer in as elective credits.
